Bangladesh has suspended transport services linking capital Dhaka as the country strives to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) announced on Tuesday in a circular to suspend all trains to and from the capital city starting from 12:01 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Sardar Shahadat Ali, a senior BR official, told journalists that the suspension would remain in force till June 30.

Also, long route buses to and from the capital city were suspended from Tuesday as part of emergency measures to contain the transmission of the disease.

Movement of ferries from the capital Dhaka to various destinations have already been halted due to growing concern over the virus.

Bangladesh reported 81 new fatalities and 6,058 fresh cases Thursday, taking the overall tally to 872,935 and death toll to 13,868.
