Gufa Pokhari: Gateway to scenic trekking experiences

Sankhuwasabha holds some of the most magical places to visit for those who want to spend some leisure time away from their hectic schedules. From the deepest valleys of the world like; Khandbhari, Milke Danda, Arun valley, Humung, Tumlingtar, Chainpur, Barabise, Chandanpur, and many more. It also welcomes you with tranquil lakes and ponds like; Sabha Pokhari, Gupha Pokhari, Panch Pokhari, Waterfalls Bodha, Waling, Namase, Batase, and more.


How to reach Gufa Pokhari, Sankhuwasabha?

There is no direct connection from Kathmandu to Sankhuwasabha by flight. It takes almost 40 minutes to fly to Biratnagar from Kathmandu and from there you will have to go to Dharan. But if you want to make your trip more fascinating, hop onto a bus from the capital city to Dharan and stay one night there in a hotel. Next morning at 6 a.m. go to the famous Clock Tower where you’ll get a jeep that will take you straight to Gufa Pokhari, Sankhuwasabha.

Visiting Sankhuwasabha in the spring is a delight, April and May is the best time, as the district welcomes you with lively rhododendrons. On your way to Gufa Pokhari, there are bumpy roads that often twist and turn up the hills, but the journey is worth it once you reach the destination. After crossing Hile, make sure to stop by Basantapur which has a market. During your road trip, the breathtaking view of the mountains and panorama will astound you to the core.


On the first day, wake up early for the sunrise to see the red and oranges touch the snow, the valley is known for its snow-capped mountain ranges. You can see the fifth highest peak in the world, Mount Makalu, and also not to forget the highest, Everest. Enjoy the scenic phenomenon that takes place before you while sipping on Tibetan butter tea.

After that, take a walk around the town, mingle with the locals and enjoy the slopes and hills. Take in the sights and smells, what better way to celebrate life and its blessings than with an authentic meal. Have dhido, yak meat, sisnu (stinging nettle) curry, and fermented soybeans for lunch, the perfect mix of savoury and spicy. Take your time and catch a glimpse of Gufa Pokhari nearby.

Then make your way to Suke Bazar where they sell groceries and clothes, bringing them from Basantapur. A little chit-chat with the locals will take you a long way, get to know the culture. People from various ethnic communities, such as the Rai, Yakkha, Limbu, Magar, Abadhi, Sunuwar, Rajbansi, Maithili, Tamang, Sherpa, Brahmin, and Chhetri reside in the area. Gather stories along the way, it is a part of a travellers chronicles.


Getting to know cultures and their food from far and wide is what backpacking is about. Have rice, pork, ghee, and radish pickle for dinner. And let’s not forget tongba, a millet-based alcoholic beverage, and chhyang, another alcoholic beverage made from corn and millet. Take pleasure in a befitting meal and as night falls.

Next day, eat your breakfast, tighten up your shoelaces, and get set for your journey to Khoping Pokhari. For someone who’s new, finding the right trail to the Pokhari might be extra tricky, so make sure to take one of the locals with you for proper navigation. It will take you about four hours to reach your destination. You’ll have to go through Suke Bazar, Jore Pokhari, and Milke Danda.

Make your way up, playing hide and seek with sights of rhododendron. Enjoy a hearty lunch of rice, delicious yak or pork meat and radish pickle with tongba at Jore Pokhari. There aren’t many hotels after this point, so pack light snacks, protein bars, and water for the hike.

After a long hike, you’ll be glad to reach Khoping Pokhari. A glimpse of it is enough to make you forget your woes and fatigue. Absorb the beauty of nature and take your time to appreciate it. The lake is extremely alluring and peaceful, helping you forget your muddle. It is as big as Gufa Pokhari but Khoping Pokhari has more water in it. Click some pictures for memories sake. And make your way back, another four hours until you reach Gufa Pokhari.

After returning back to Gufa Pokhari, go to the outskirts and indulge in a conversation with the locals. Don’t forget to buy the famed churpi, made from yak milk, for your loved ones. A relaxing evening under sky or by the fire should help you unwind nad work up an appetite. Make sure you enjoy one last hearty meal in Gufa Pokhari.
