Maldives will lift an ongoing curfew and ease restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 as daily cases have dropped, President's Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez announced here on Wednesday.
Starting July 8, individuals who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine can now travel between islands without a compulsory quarantine period, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced. Travelers must present a negative PCR test taken at least 14 days after their second dose.
Guesthouses in the country will be reopened for tourists visiting from South Asian countries starting July 30 under strictly enforced safety measures, Azeez said. He said that the government will prioritise vaccinating 60 percent of residents in islands where guesthouses operate and 90 percent of guesthouse employees.
Meanwhile, resorts in the country will reopen on July 15, he said. Precautions will be taken to test 10 percent of resort employees every month, he said.
A total of 105 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Maldives on Tuesday, a significant decline from the daily average case count in May and June.
A total of 74,585 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Maldives since the pandemic began.
