Many Nepali mountaineers have received proper appreciation as their names are in the Guinness Book of World Records. However, even the world record holders have not been able to get a single identity card from the government so far.
Climber Kami Rita Sherpa, who has set a world record by climbing Mt. Everest 26 times, has to wait in line like everyone else at the airport when traveling home or abroad. Similarly, there is no facility for famous climbers even in government hospitals.
Everest Summiters Association has been trying to facilitate the climbers from the government. A few years ago, under the initiative of the association, the Government of Nepal had given opportunities to some Everest climbers to become Liaison Officers in Everest Climbing.
Climber Maya Sherpa, who is currently leading the second term as the president of the Everest Summiters Association, informed NepalNews that she is trying to create a situation where climbers can be facilitated as she is fully aware of the condition of the climbers in Nepal.
For this, her team is meeting with the Minister of Tourism soon.
Maya Sherpa is also the Vice President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
World record holder Maya Sherpa has been climbing mountains almost every year. She started climbing Amadablam in 2003 and has since climbed various mountains both in Nepal and abroad. She climbed Mt. Everest three times in 2006, 2007, and 2016. Sherpa has also joined the first Nepali women's team and climbed the world's second-largest mountain Ketu. So far, she has climbed 7 mountains higher than 8,000 meters and has set a target to climb all 14 peaks.
According to her, the government should provide necessary assistance to the families of those who died while climbing the mountain. She further added that if the government makes arrangements to ensure all the climbers, the climbers and their families would benefit from it.
Climber Maya Sherpa has been giving presentations and lectures in various countries from time to time to promote Nepal's mountaineering.
