The Microfinance Association of Nepal (MFAN), the operator of microfinance institutions in the country, held the first national conference of the chief executive officers (CEOs) of microfinance institutions.

The two-day conference in Kathmandu concluded with a nine-point commitment letter, said Jagat Pokharel, president of the association. He said that the commitment letter was issued after extensive discussions between the CEOs participating in the conference and experts and officials of MFAN.

The commitment letter includes issues such as conducting the program without duplication of members while expanding the branch office, obtaining the letter of acceptance of the resignation of the previous microfinance institution before appointing the staff, conducting the efficiency enhancement program of the staff, and providing timely services.

Similarly, the CEOs have also committed to reducing the cost of the organization by making maximum use of information technology and to provide information to the members in a transparent manner. They also expressed commitment to reduce unhealthy competition between microfinance institutions and branches.

About 40 CEOs of MFIs across the country participated in the conference, said Rabin Pokharel, Chief Executive Officer of the MFAN. The participating Chief Executive Officers were trained by Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank Dr. Prakash Shrestha, Former Secretary to the Government of Nepal and Microfinance Expert Dr. Man Bahadur BK and Microfinance Expert and Associate Professor of Tribhuvan University Dr. Bharat Singh Thapa.

Earlvato Lazavechia, a professor of microfinance and a professor at the University of Padova, Italy also provided training through Zoom.
