With the increase in sales of goat milk products, the National Goat research center at Bandipur in Tanahu is struggling to meet the demand.  Buddhi Ram Acharya, Senior Technical Officer, National Goat Research Program, Bandipur, Tanahun, says that Nepali cheese is very popular among foreigners.

He said that six species of goats were reared at the National Goat Research Center in Bandipur.

Demand for Boer and Saanen goats is increasing. He said that Saanen breed could gives two and a half liters to four liters of milk in a day.

The Saanen goat is more famous worldwide for its cheese than milk. "Earlier, cheese was bought from Italy for Rs 2,500 and sold in Nepal at an average of Rs 3,500, but now Nepali products are being sold in the market," he said.

Raju Kandel, coordinator of the National Goat Research Program, said that there is more demand for cheese than goat milk in Nepal.

He said that the cheese produced by the Goat Research Center in Bandipur will be sold at various hotels in Pokhara. He says that the demand for cheese has increased in recent times as the cheese produced in Nepal is cheaper and of better quality.

He said that the cheese produced in Bandipur is sold at Rs. 800 per kg and it is also very popular among foreigners. Goat's milk is low in fat and high in protein, so the demand for goat's milk and cheese is significantly higher in Europe and the United States. He said that Nepalis have also started liking goat cheese for the last two to three years.
