Inflation rises in Terai

The highest inflation has been found in the Terai region. Despite the availability of easy and convenient transport network, resources and means, it has been found that the rate of price increase has increased in the Terai. After the Terai, Kathmandu Valley and hilly areas have seen an increase in inflation.

According to the data released by Nepal Rastra Bank today, inflation has been 5.47 percent in Kathmandu Valley, 6.50 percent in Terai, 5.32 percent in hills and 5.97 percent in mountains till mid-January. Inflation in these sectors was 2.12 percent, 2.78 percent, 3.30 percent and 2.05 percent respectively in January 2012.

Similarly, year-on-year point-to-point consumer price inflation stood at 5.97 percent in January. Such inflation was 2.70 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year. Inflation in food and beverages group was 6 percent and non-food and services group inflation was 5.96 percent in the review month.

Similarly, prices of ghee and oil, vegetables and pulses and subgroups of food and beverages group increased by 20.68 percent, 14.07 percent and 9.36 percent respectively in January 2012/13 compared to January 2012/13. Inflation in non-food and services group, transport, education and furnishing and home appliances sub-groups stood at 15.87 percent, 7.86 percent and 5.92 percent, respectively.

Towards wholesale inflation, annual point-based wholesale inflation stood at 10.34 percent in January. Such inflation was 6.12 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year. Wholesale prices of consumer goods, intermediate goods and capital goods increased by 12.09 percent, 9.92 percent and 7.00 percent respectively during the review month. Wholesale price of construction materials increased by 16.61 percent during the review month.
