Khotang imports 1b worth oil annually

Most of the residents of Khotang use imported cooking oil in their kitchens. According to the census of 2078, in the district with a population of two hundred six thousand three hundred and twelve, only a small number of residents have been using local ghee, mustard, and sunflower oil.

Manoj Bajimaya, General Secretary of Khotang Chamber of Commerce and Industry, informed that the district consumes more than 1 billion 500 million rupees worth of processed edible oil.  

The population of Khotehang Rural Municipality, which has nine wards, is 16,952. The population of Barahpokhari rural municipality is 11 thousand four hundred sixty and edible oil worth Rs 8 crore is consumed here annually. The population of Diprung Chuichumma Rural Municipality is 16 thousand five hundred and 49. According to the statistics of the rural municipality, the annual consumption of cooking oil in six wards is more than 70 million rupees.

"Some local levels have started subsidizing the production of mustard", he said, "Due to the lack of raw materials, the edible oil production industry has not yet been established."

Rawa Bensi has distributed 1,260 kg of advanced mustard seeds to the farmers for the promotion of mustard cultivation. The rural municipality called for applications and distributed the seeds to 650 farmers based on their needs. Aiselukhark has also called for applications to grant subsidies to farmers cultivating mustard. So far, 623 farmers have applied to cultivate mustard, according to the rural municipality. All the ten local levels of the district have determined the pocket areas and implemented the 'One Village, One Product' program.
