As the Maghi festival approaches in the district, the number of people buying yams, sweet potato and groundnuts in the town and village markets have started increasing. The major trading centers here are Pipalla, Dipayal, Rajpur, Silgadhi and other markets like Budar, Gaira and Vipinagar. Even those who have gone out of the district for the Maghi festival have started returning home. At present, the price of wild yam in the district varies from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg depending on the place, said Bhavana Bohara of Jorayal Gaonpalika-1. He said, "The number of buyers has increased due to the religious belief that wild yams should be eaten on January 15. The price of yams has also gone up sharply." Dhwaj Bahadur Deuba, manager of Deuba Vegetable and Fruit Shop, said that there is a shortage of wild yams in the city market as the yam traders in the villages have reduced the number of yams coming to the market. He said, "Consumers are looking for more wild yams. Corona terror has not brought wild yams from the village. We have been selling yams produced at home due to the lack of wild yams. The demand is not enough." According to Deuja, at least one quintal of homemade yam is being sold daily in Dipayal, Rajpur and Pipalla markets only. Due to the threat of the Corona epidemic, there was no yam trade in the market like last year, said the concerned trader. Chakra Bahadur Kathayat of Dipayal Rajpur said that the price of homemade yams has increased due to the non-arrival of wild yams from the village. He said, "Wild yams have stopped coming from the village. The price of domestic yams has also gone up and it is difficult to get them. The domestic yams that used to be available at Rs 40 have now suddenly gone up to Rs 100."
