Time and again cases of animal cruelty have come forward in the public diaspora. Animal rights activists in Kathmandu are now demanding actions taken for a recent case of animal cruelty, where a dog was brutally killed with a sharp sickle. Through the efforts of protestors, a case has been filed against the culprit in the local police station.

Over the years, several cases of acts of animal cruelty has been recorded in videos and have called for a public outrage through social media sharings. Physical protests like “Justice for Khairey” were seen in the streets of Kathmandu last year.

Despite outrage, repeated cases of animal violence have come forward in Kathmandu. Nepal News asked valley residents what they think.

“Animals are instinctual and playful, humans and animals have mutually evolved. Animal cruelty is simply and utterly inhuman. We must be nurturing to animals as they are to us. Humans must surely be poor, devilish, and dark to be so brutal to animals without an ounce of guilt,” says Puspa Bhandari, 20.

“ It is saddening to hear about animals being mercilessly tortured. Street dogs should be safely sheltered by the authorities of our city, through private partnership this is very much possible,” says Radhika Sharma, 40.

“ Being a animal lover, cases of animal cruelty is quite disturbing for me. It is hard to imagine why anyone would torture animals. There should be some penalties put in place to stop people from being cruel to animals,” says Sidhant Niraula, 25.

“ These sorts of incidents do not get solved through protests or social media movements, the problem at core is humans have become insensitive towards almost everything. The torturing of animals comes from a attitude of mercilessness and thinking that their pain doesnot matter,” says Ujjwal Joshi, 17.

“ I support the organisations working for the benefit of street animals, we should support these organisations from little or more that we are able to give. Animal welfare should not be ignored as it often gets in Nepal,” says Ankit Shrestha, 22.
