Due to problems in waste management in Kathmandu Valley as a result of constant rainfall since last night, garbage has piled up in several streets.

The waste management services have faced difficulties in deploying personnel to clean up the garbage that has been piling up due to continuous rain. Stating that garbage cannot be brought to Sisdol due to regular rains, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has urged the citizens not to take out garbage from their houses for a few days.

According to the locals, garbage has piled up in the streets as it is not possible to carry garbage during the rainy season and some people completely neglect the health standards outside their homes, resulting in them throwing garbage haphazardly.

At present, 18 local level waste management of Kathmandu Valley have been taking place for the last 14 years. Although the work of Bancharedanda under construction was started in May 2019 saying that it would be completed in one year, only the work of the first cell has been completed so far.

A contract agreement was signed to complete the work within a year on May 2019 to construct a long term sanitary landfill site at Banchare Danda. According to the agreement, the entire construction work should have been completed by last April, but the work of the second cell has not been completed yet.

The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction has informed that the construction work of the first 'cell' has been completed in Bancharedanda before 10 o'clock. From the valley, 1,200 metric tons of garbage is discharged in Sisdol daily.

Out of this, 500 metric tons of garbage come from Kathmandu alone. For the waste management, 150 to 200 private and Kathmandu metropolitan's vehicles used to go to Sisdol daily.
