In the depths of the sea lie, mysterious creatures, you may never have seen or heard of. With dipping temperatures, rising pressures and little to no sunlight, the host of marine life inhabiting the deep sea may look a bit bizarre, but also marvelous as they survive such harsh conditions. Have a look at 5 such strange, yet spectacular creatures which exist at the bottom rungs of the ocean.
Goblin Shark
These gigantic marine creatures exist downwards of 100 meters deep inside the ocean. Capable of growing upwards of 4 meters on maturing, they have a long snout that is believed to detect electrical signals coming from other creatures. They don’t have weak muscles and a receded skeleton, which implies that they are slow swimmers.
Vampire Squid
This football-sized creature has a deep red body, bulging blue eyes, and eight long arms. If agitated, it unleashes the insides of its arms, which contain small tentacle-like ridges called “cirri”. Though scary in its looks, it is actually quite passive in nature.
Japanese Spider Crab
Known for its large leg span ranging anywhere up to 12 feet from one claw to another, this creature looks more mighty than it actually is. It’s not a predator but rather survives by scavenging on decaying matter on the ocean floor. They often camouflage themselves in sponges when younger.
Batfish
Known for being bad swimmers owing to their particular body shape, these muddy creatures survive by crawling on the ocean floor using their specialized pelvic fins.
Angler Fish
These long-mouthed fish with sharp teeth emit a light that is visible on a protrusion above their head. Since the deep sea is pitch-dark, the little glint of light they emit is appealing to small fish which fall prey to these Angler fish when they come too close to the light.
