Tomodachi Restaurant, which has a variety of Japanese and authentic Sherpa dishes, is located in Dhumbarai. One can enjoy their dinner with their friends and family with elegant Tibetan furniture, that makes the restaurant look very antique and traditional. Tomodachi is a Japanese word that means ‘Friends’. And the main attraction of this place is its simplicity.
Lhakpa Yangzin Sherpa the owner of Tomodachi says that, “We have Japanese dishes but the location is not that suitable for Japanese food, so it has yet to gain more popularity.”
“Our more popular main dishes are Himalayan dishes like aloo roti, Thendup, Syakpa and so on.”, she adds.
I was really excited to try their dishes. And the first dish they suggested to me was Rikikur (Potato Pancake). While it is traditionally eaten at breakfast, it can be eaten at any time. The dish includes a pancake made of potato with butter, somar (fermented serkam) and spring onion leaves (Scallions) with varieties of pickles on the side.
The way to eat Rikikur right is to put butter on the flat pancake first and then pour somar on it. While I am not a big fan of spicy food, if you like it then do not forget to add their pickle.
The ingredients complemented the pancake taste.
Sherpa says that, “Rikikur is considered as the number one dish in Sherpa Cuisine. And it is loved by everyone.”
“At first, we grate raw potatoes and then add a small amount of flour, salt, an egg and mix it all up”, she adds further.
The second dish that came was buff Gyuma, Tibetan blood Sausage. It is made of ingredients like intestine, blood and rice. The taste of Gyuma was very new for me. It was crunchy because of the rice, and with every bite, it melted in the mouth.
The last dish I had was Goat lungs(Khasi ko fokso). Flour, egg and other ingredients did the dish justice. It not only added crunch but flavours too.
Tomodachi has its branch in Namche Bazaar and are looking to open many more other places with delicious Japanese and Sherpa cuisines. They want people to come to the restaurant and enjoy their food with their family and friends.
