Now located in Jhamsikhel, Yum Yum Cafe serves a diverse array of Asian cuisines. Jagat Lama, Managing Director of Yum Yum Cafe explains, “As Yum Yum is a Pan-Asian restaurant, we serve Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisines.”

The first thing I noticed as I stepped into the restaurant was its dazzling interior. The quiet surroundings and beautiful decorations makes it a perfect place for meetings, quick meals, and friendly gatherings.

I had heard a lot about Yum Yum from my friends and when I got to know that they had moved to Jhamsikhel, I was eager to try the new place. Going through their menu, I wanted to try a lot of their dishes but one thing in particular caught my eyes, I really wanted to try their Takoyaki. It is a ball-shaped Japanese snack cooked in a special moulded pan made of a wheat flour-based batter, filled with typically minced or diced octopus, chicken or vegetables, pickled ginger and green onions.

It tasted as amazing as it sounded. The soft wheat flour dough with eggs and flavoured with dashi soup was a perfect way to start the meal. The flavour of dashi really came out with hot Takoyaki making a beautiful combination of aroma and well blended flavour.

Lok Parsad Subba, the chef explained, “Though the Tako means octopus we also have chicken and vegetables. So the people can have other options if they do not prefer octopus.”

Next we were served with Cheung Fun, a Chinese rice noodle roll served either as a snack, or a small meal. “It is a thin savoury roll made from rice, filled with shrimp, vegetables, or other ingredients,” explained Subba.

This was a perfect serve after the Takoyaki, as the roll was mild and really took on the flavour of the soy base sauce. Soft, light and full of texture.

Then came in Stone Pot. They had a lot of options for this particular from pork to vegetables they had it all and it comes with four different sauces to choose from.

And the dish stood true to its name as it came in a big pot full of surprises. The dish had sticky rice, bell pepper, mushrooms, and tofu. And the brown garlic sauce which is oyster base sauce just added more flavour to the dish.

And as I tell my friends all the time how one can never go wrong with Sushi, so when I saw the dish in their menu I was obliged to order. And it was indeed a good call as it was so different from other sushis I have ever had. The sticky rice and veggies were the same but they had garnished it with cream cheese and crushed wasabi peas. The dish was subtly sweet and crushed wasabi peas added texture. It was pleasantly different, something one should definitely try.

Then I had Paper Pot Thai green curry. Made out of zucchini, broccoli, cherry tomato, basil, baby corn, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, Thai paste and coconut milk, the curry was thick, creamy, filling, and bright. Though I am not a big fan of spicy food, this curry made me want to take a spoonful again and again. A right dish for all the spice lovers out there.

They also have non-vegetarian options

With lunch coming to an end, I really wanted to try their drinks as they serve Japanese concept drinks from their Sakura bar.

Sushi Martini cocktail drink sounded so bazzier that I really want to try it. Rakesh Tandukar, bartender, said, “It is a Japanese themed gastronomy cocktail that plays with the concept of food and drink together. A gin based cocktail with mango puree extract, a hint of wasabi and litchi juice garnished with sushi on the top.”

I was told to take a bite from the sushi and then take a sip of the cocktail. And as promised it was full of flavours, something I had never had before.

Other drinks I got were Bubblegum and Chilling Lime. When I saw them bringing Bubble Gum drink, it really fascinated me. The fresh orange juice, bubble gum syrup, cranberry juice and soda made the juice very fruity and refreshing.

The other drink had a sour flavour of lemon and bitter tartness of ginger. “We don’t use lemon syrup in any drinks, we just use fresh lemon and ginger, sprite and salt,” says Tandukar.
