The uncertain future of Kamalpokhari

Kamalpokhari’s construction started in 2020 with the promise to finish in 2021 but due to COVID-19 the construction is longer than anticipated. But despite being under construction, many people still go there to eat food and sunbathe which has increased the pollution in the area.

Rajendra Singh, Head of Kamalpokhari Chhath Puja Samaj, while in conversation with NepalNews says, “People eat here and do not throw their rubbish in the dustbin which has affected the cleanliness of the place a lot. We had hired people to clean the place but he had left since the COVID lockdown.”

Along with the growing pollution, fishes at Kamalpokhari are also dying due to the low level of water. “We had bought fishes with our own money to control seaweeds, however, many have died as there is no supply of water for the pond."

To control the growing pollution, the organization has been running a cleaning campaign every fifteen days on Saturdays, however, they are going to start cleaning every week instead.

 Singh adds, “Now we will clean Kamalpokhari every week and fill water in the pond every day with our own money.”
