Chief Minister of Karnali Province, Rajkumar Sharma, has said stressed the need of enhancing access of communication services to people living in remote settlements of Karnali.
In an interaction with telecommunication service providers and stakeholders, organized by Nepal Telecommunication Authority on Friday, Chief Minister Sharma expressed his concern over the state of communication services to the people in upper Karnali.
"Telecommunication services should be extended to all people and people's right to information can be realized only through easy access to communication services," he said.
Likewise, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Krishna Bahadur GC said that the telecom service providers should expand their services as well as increase capacity. He said that it is necessary to formulate laws for regulation of electricity supply, management of technical human resources and provision of subsidy packages.
Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment Jit Bahadur Malla said that citizens of Mugu, Dolpa and Humla have trouble in accessing telephone service and requested the authorities to liaise with the Ministry of Forestry for the installation of telecommunications towers.
Minister of State for Physical Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources Urmila BK emphasized that the authority should focus on providing communication to the remote areas of Karnali. There is a problem in the operation of telephone and internet services in Dolpa, Humla and Mugu.
On the occasion, Director of the NTA Consumer Interest Protection Division, Arjun Ghimire, said that the interaction was conducted in Karnali province with the aim of getting information about telecommunication problems, informing consumers, discussing with approved service providers at the local level and identifying solutions.
On the occasion, the participants of the interaction suggested steps to be taken by the authority to improve the situation of telecommunication services in the province. Along with members of Karnali cabinet, head and deputy head of various local levels, staffers of related agencies participated in the program.
