As the conflict escalates in Ukraine, Nepalese living there are facing food and shelter problems. A student who came in contact with NepalNews has informed that the problem is worse on ground. She said she was not allowed to enter neighboring Poland when she felt unsafe in the capital, Kiev.
Some Nepalese who arrived at the border from Kiev to go to Poland by bus have been denied entry and are waiting to return to Kiev. A Nepali student studying in a university in Kiev has expressed her grief that she has run out of money on the way from Kiev to the Polish border.
Even though their money is in the local bank, this problem has arisen after they could not withdraw it through the card. They did not even have a place to stay overnight in the area near the Polish border where they now are. As the train from the Polish border to Kiev is now closed, they are returning to Kiev by bus.
Some of the students in Ukraine have contacts with the Nepalese Embassy in Germany, which also oversees the condition of Nepalese people in Ukraine.
The Nepalese Embassy urges Nepalis living in Ukraine to exercise restraint and stay safe at home. The embassy said that it was not possible to leave the country immediately by air as the airspace was temporarily closed for civil and commercial flights. The embassy requested civilians to, if possible, travel by road and/or rail to a safer location in western Ukraine.
The embassy also requested that the directives issued by the Ukrainian government and related colleges, universities and companies be fully complied with.
Similarly, documents including passport, identity card, license, bank card are also requested to be kept with them. It is also requested to be in regular contact with friends, family and mission.
The embassy has also requested to seek nearby bomb shelters if air sirens/bomb warnings etc. go off. In case such a problem arises, underground metros have been temporarily set up as bomb shelters. One may need Google Maps for locating such places.
The Nepalese Embassy is also requested to keep up with the latest developments.
