Nanda Kumari Nembang, 35, of Falgunanda Village has been rescued and kept at a rehabilitation center in Kathmandu for treatment by the National Commission for Women (NCW). Similarly, an elderly couple stranded on the road in Jorpati was rescued and rehabilitated in an old age home.
Munamagar of Godavari and Laxmi Bhat of Doti were rescued after being burnt alive. The two women were provided Rs 500,000 each; a woman who was a victim of attempted rape received Rs 300,000 from the fund; and a woman who was subjected to extreme torture on the charge of witchcraft in Swayambhu was provided Rs 500,000 from the fund. Thus, the NCW has been providing financial assistance from the Gender Based Violence Prevention Fund to the victims of such violent incidents.
The NCW has received 713 complaints in the last six months. The complaints were registered from July of 2021 to January of 2022. Among the complaints, 634 incidents were related to domestic violence and 79 incidents of violence against women. The highest number of complaints have been registered in Bagmati (618), while the lowest number of complaints are from Karnali and Far-Western states. In the fiscal year 2020/21, a total of 1570 complaints were registered in the NCW.
The NCW has been notifying most of the complaints to the district police offices. Various organizations have been assisting women for psycho-social and psycho-counseling services and legal treatment services as well. Sathi, an organization that has been providing safe shelter services for women, currently houses 31 women. Services for emergency, reconciliation and mediation have also been provided through the telephone helpline, and psycho-social counseling, legal counseling, legal aid and representation in court have also been provided.
