A deer has died due to the snow at Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, the only hunting reserve in Nepal. The deer reportedly died during rescue after getting buried in snow when it left its usual habitat in the upper Buki forest area which had experienced heavy snowfall. The Ratuwa deer (Red deer) was found buried in snow in a forest north of the Dhorpatan Office, according to the Reserve Office.
Ranger Supushpa Regmi of Dhorpatan Reserve informed that the deer died while being rescued and treated. The one-year-old deer trapped in snow was found by a dog.
Due to heavy snowfall in the Buki area of the hunting reserve, wild animals in the upper region migrate to the Dhorpatan valley to avoid cold. Wild animals have been dying of cold due to heavy snowfall in the lower region. Some animals also die of starvation when the snow does not melt for a long time.
Heavy snow and cold have affected people's lives in Dhorpatan area. The section of Burtiwang-Dhorpatan Reserve from Suprang to Dhorpatan Valley has been completely blocked. According to Ranger Regmi, the traffic has been completely disrupted.
