MBBS fees above prescribed amount to be banned

It has been agreed that educational institutions will not be allowed to charge more fees than prescribed by the National Medical Education Commission. In a discussion held between the officials of the National Medical Education Commission, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Kathmandu Medical College, Nobel Medical College, parents, and students at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology today, it was agreed not to charge more than the prescribed fee.

Dr. Hari Lamsal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry, informed that it has been agreed not to charge more for the MBBS program of the undergraduate level of medical education. Students' unions were protesting after some colleges charged more than the commission had stipulated. As per the agreement, the medical college will charge MBBS fee as per the National Medical Education Act, 2018/19.

Considering the responsibility of the student to ensure learning opportunities in a comfortable and conducive environment, it has been agreed that the problem related to the student's dormitory will be resolved through mutual discussion between the concerned educational institution and parents & students. The concerned university will facilitate in this task. In the meeting, it has been agreed that the commission will immediately start working to determine the heading amount to be paid to the university, thematic council, and educational institutions under the total fee while determining the fee for the program including MBBS as per the Medical Education Act with effect from the next academic session.

In order to assess the inconvenience seen in the implementation of the Medical Education Act, the Commission will immediately consult with the concerned bodies, experts, and other stakeholders regarding the amendment of the Act. The Medical Education Commission has agreed to take forward the necessary amendment process, said Dr. Lamsal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry.
