Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma has said the government plans to implement the 'One Municipality, One Post Office' concept from the current fiscal year itself as part of restructuring of the postal service.
Addressing a programme organized at the General Post Office, Dillibazaar on the occasion of the World Post Day today, the Communication and Information Technology Minister said the country's postal service is to be restructured in line with the federal system by connecting the service to information technology.
"The post which remains as an essential public service is running with service motive. Although it has its services spread across the country, it is not possible to make it effective operating it in traditional manner," she said, adding that the government's goal is to make the postal service advanced, reliable and competitive to bring extensive reform in it.
Minister Sharma also expressed the commitment to enhance collaboration at the national and international level for establishing Nepal's standing as an active member state in the global postal network. She added that to achieve this goal technology, physical infrastructure and the capacity of the employees of postal service would be enhanced, and coordination established with the stakeholders as well.
Secretary at the Ministry, Krishna Bahadur Raut, reiterated that the government would facilitate to making the postal service effective, credible and laced with modern technology as per the need of time.
Director-General of the Department of Postal Service, Pradip Raj Adhikari said they are eager to move ahead the timely restructuring of the postal service with the realization that the service could not be run in a traditional way.
Individuals making contribution to the postal service and employees serving for long were honoured on the occasion. The theme of the World Post Day this year is - “Together for Trust: Collaborating for a Safe and Connected Future.”
