A modern animal rescue center has been established in 10 bighas of land belonging to Jamunkhadi Community Forest at Kankai Municipality in the district.

The modern rescue center was established at a cost of around Rs 20 million by the Province-1 government and the community forest combined. Animals and birds of the forest are now being shifted at the center, said the Chairperson of the Forest Users’ Committee, Khem Sitaula.

Animals and birds were reared by the forest after the beginning of eco-tourism. Similarly, the animals and birds brought to the center after rescuing from Ilam, Taplejung, Panchthar, and different places in the Jhapa district have been kept here.

Sitaula added animals and birds of more than two dozen species were now sheltered at the center established for the first time in Province-1.

The previous center was congested while the present one is spacious with natural ponds as well, he mentioned. The rescue center was established at Jamunkhadi as per the government’s policy of establishing an animal rescue center.

The Jamunkhadi Community Forest is famous as an open sanctuary since 2065 BS. Wildlife of more than two dozen of species including beer, leopard, python, and tortoise, among others are in the open zoo of the community forest.

Around Rs 600 thousand is spent on treatment, and food for the wild animals and birds as well as for paying employees in a month, he shared, adding it would be further relief to them if the government arranged a veterinary doctor.
