Oranges worth Rs 20 crore have been exported from the Myagdi district this year. According to Krishi Gyan Kendra, the oranges produced in the district are exported to the district headquarters Beni as well as the capital Kathmandu, Pokhara, Muglin, and other markets. Kiran Sigdel, the head of the center, informed that most of the oranges from the gardens in Myagdi have been exported.
"We estimate that oranges worth Rs. 200 million have been exported at the rate of Rs. 60 per kg," he said.
There are more than two hundred orange orchards in Rakhu, Marek, Surkemela, Baranja, Bhedbari, Arman, Runma, Bim, Okharbot, Takam, Ghatan, Piple, Bhagwati, Beg, Dowa, Dosalle, Ghar, Bhurung Tatopani, Dana and Narchang in the district. According to Krishi Gyan Kendra's data, 760 hectares of orange fruit are cultivated. More than 355 hectares of land are producing plants. The technicians of Krishi Gyan Kendra, the Local Level Agriculture Branch, and the Orange Zone of Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project studied the condition of orange production by crop cutting method in different places of Myagdi.
Rupa Vick, Deputy Technical Assistant of Orange Zone Office Myagdi, said that oranges have grown at the rate of 11 metric tons per hectare. Last year, two thousand hundred and eighty metric tons of oranges were produced and Rs. 130 crores were received. Orange picking started in the last week of November.
The merchant had reached the garden with a car to buy oranges. Humen, who planted 400 orange plants in a field that grows 10 muri of rice a year, said that oranges worth Rs. 7 lahks were sold from the garden this year. "The son went abroad, after his daughter's marriage, he uprooted a bush in a barren field, sold four tolas of gold, and planted orange trees in a pit," he said.
After picking the oranges and sending them to the market, the farmers are busy preparing for garden management. Farmers have said that they are busy with fertilizing, irrigating, mulching, applying bodo paste, and pruning branches.
