Voting for by-election of Lumbini National Assembly begins

The voting for the vacant seat at the National Assembly of Lumbini Province has begun.

The seat in the National Assembly of Lumbini Province had fallen vacant as Chandra Bahadur Khadka from Arghakhanchi, who had won the election as a candidate of the CPN (Maoist Centre), switched his allegiance to CPN UML. The CPN (Maoist Centre) had then revoked Khadka’s membership during a disciplinary hearing of the party.

The voting started at 9 am at the Karmachari Milan Kendra in the provincial capital Dang. The voters of the National Assembly have been maintaining social distance.

Meanwhile, Gehendra Kunwar, Information Officer of the Election Office, mentioned that by 9:30 am a total of 58 members had already cast their votes including Chief Minister of Lumbini Province Shankar Pokharel. The voting process will take place till 3 pm.

Kunwar informed that the vote counting process will begin immediately after the polls are concluded. He also said that if there is no technical problem then the results will be made public today itself.

There are two candidates vying for the vacant seat of the Lumbini National Assembly. Khadka is the candidate of the CPN UML while Driga Narayan Pandey is the joint candidate of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal and Rastriya Janmorhca.

A total of 300 people will cast their votes to the vacant seat of the Lumbini National Assembly today including 83 members of the assembly and 217 mayors and deputy mayors of the various municipalities of the province,
