The country witnessed a new political development on Monday with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli losing the vote of confidence that he had sought in the Parliament. Along with this, the opposition parties have started holding talks to forge an alliance to form an alternate government within the deadline provided by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

However, Mahanta Thakur, Chairperson of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), has put a spanner in the works. The problem in forging an alliance to form a new government has emerged after Thakur issued a statement that his party would not be part of any such alliance.

Some leaders of the JSP have stated that though Upendra Yadav, the other Chairperson of the party, has signed a pact to form an alliance to create a new government it would not hold any meaning within the party. Thakur has stated that Yadav’s decision to join the alliance was his personal decision and not the party’s resolution. In fact, Thakur has communicated this decision of the party to President Bhandari.

“The decision made by Upendra Yadav to join the alliance is his personal choice. I am the first lawful chairperson of the party and the party has not taken any official decision to join any alliance,” said Thakur, adding, “Hence JSP will not be involved in forming any new government.”

With the two top leaders of the party issuing differing statements, we will now have to wait and see how the events unfold in the coming days.
