The Kerunga marshland stretching from ward no 11 to 24 in Bharatpur Metropolitan City (BMC) in Chitwan district will be developed as a tourism spot.

The BMC is going to prepare a master plan for beautification of the Kerunga marshland, and to develop it as a tourist destination. A committee coordinated by Deputy Mayor of BMC, Chitrasen Adhikari, is advancing this project.

BMC Mayor Renu Dahal shared that the 20.3 km long marshland would be expanded by at least 6 metres. The actual area of the area would be determined after the demarcation is carried out, said Mayor Dahal.

The Intensive Urban Development Project has allocated Rs 180 million for developing this area. The BMC would also add additional budget to the project, said Dahal. Plan is afoot to construct footpath and separate lanes for bicycle lanes in both sides of the road adjoining the marshland. Furthermore, a garden and gymnasium would be built in the locality.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.37 billion, said Deputy Mayor Adhikari.

BMC is hopeful that the marshland would not only add charm to the Metropolis but also serve as an outlet in the areas having inundation problems.

In monsoon, flood would enter human settlements through the narrow marshland. The BMC believes that the construction and management of the marshland would help address the inundation problem.
