Right to federal government to adjust transport fares demanded

Transportation workers have demanded that the federal government be given right to adjust the fare of public transport.

Nepal Transport Workers Union affiliated to Nepali Congress, Nepal Transport Workers Union affiliated to CPN (UML), All Nepal Transport Workers Union affiliated to CPN (Maoist Center) met National Assembly, Legislative Management Committee Chairman Pashuram Meghi Gurung on Friday and demanded that the right to adjust public transport fare be given to the federal government.

The transport workers have also demanded to amend the anti-worker provisions of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 1992/93 and other acts. Chairman of the Nepal Transport Workers' Union, Dharmaraj Bhandari, said that they have demanded to amend the system of paying the medical expenses of the injured so that the cost of medical treatment does not exceed Rs 300,000.

The workers said that the state government has enacted the state vehicle and transport management act in conflict with some sections of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 1992/93.

They have also demanded to bring the taxi tempo unit of the Department of Weights and Measures under the Ministry of Transport, the Insurance Committee under the Ministry of Transport and to amend the law by ending the wrong practice of paying compensation to small vehicles for accidents caused by small vehicles.

Similarly, special provision should be made for e-rickshaw drivers in the provision related to distribution of driver's license and provision should be made for the relief of workers injured and maimed in road accidents and general public.

In the memorandum, the union has also demanded that parking lots should be provided in each city for the small and large vehicles carrying essential goods.
