An initiative has been taken to re-open the Janakpur Cigarette Factory which was set up with the help of the Russian government. The board of directors had decided to convene a general meeting which will play an important role in reviving the factory. The factory had 366 employees in the past.
Initially 2 billion cigarettes were produced annually. Cigarettes from Yak, Deurali, Asha, Rhino and other brands produced in the factory.
A committee was formed by the Ministry of Finance to conduct necessary study for the operation of the factory which has been closed for more than two decades. It is stated that a report has been submitted to the minister for the operation of the factory.
The company had closed down during the privatization of public enterprises in 2010 when it could not meet the financial mark. In 2013, all of the employees were given leave as per the decision of the Council of Ministers.
The factory owned 33 bighas of land in Janakpur which is now under the government of province 2. Similarly, the factory also owns lands and buildings in 21 places including different districts.
