An evening with Madan Krishna: A legend in Nepalese comedies

During this time last year, comedian Madan Krishna Shrestha was admitted to a hospital. He was hospitalized with coronavirus.That coincided with his 71st birthday.

This time around, Madan Krishna has celebrated his 72nd birthday among hundreds of people.

Nepali audiences got a chance to see Shrestha, a prominent personality in the field of Nepali comedy, satire and music, on stage for more than two hours yesterday. The program was entirely focused on Madan Krishna. The program was organized at Bhrikuti Mandap on the occasion of Madan Krishna Shrestha's 72nd birthday. Recently, Madan Krishna acted in the Nepali film Lakka Jawan, which will be released on Friday. Even though production for this movie started two years ago, it could not be released due to COVID-19.


The program was started by the producer of the movie Dhrub Onta and actress Anusuya Onta dancing to the song of Madan Krishna.

Madan Krishna sang some of his songs in the program.

In the program, Madan Krishna narrated various events of his life to the audience. Madan Krishna's songs were sung by his son Yaman and daughter Sarana. Kiran KC, who has been collaborating with him for 40 years, and comedian Raja Rajendra Pokhrel also sang his songs. At the end of the program, various famous artists including Madan Krishna danced to the tune of Lakka Jawan.


Veteran comedian Madan Krishna Shrestha was born in 1950 in Jitpur Phedi, a village in the northern area of Kathmandu. However, he had a life of struggle from an early age. Having lost his mother, he taught children of his own age who had to go to school. He became the headmaster at just 14 years. He used to walk from his home to Kathmandu city to study, for which he had to wake up at 6 o'clock in the morning.

He started his job as soon as he finished school. Similarly, he started his musical journey by singing hymns.

He was also involved in the production of radio programs related to agriculture. After leaving the show in 1982 to co-produce a program with another comedian, Haribansha Acharya, they left their jobs and started their own production house.


Madan Krishna and Haribansha reached the peak of their popularity by performing on many stages and playing in movies. He also played an effective role in the political movements in the country in 1990 and 2007.

His wife died of cancer a few years ago. Veteran artist Madan Krishna, who is currently suffering from Parkinson's disease, seems to be weak, but his activism is still commendable.
