Five student unions have decided to protest against President Bidhya Devi Bhandari’s move to dissolve the House of Representatives (HoR) and the government’s lackadaisical way of handling the COVID-19 threat.

The student wings of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), Madhav Kumar Nepal-led faction of CPN UML, Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, and Rastriya Janamorcha issued a joint statement calling for a protest against the president’s move and government’s inefficiency in handling the health crisis.

The statement mentions that the government has not focused on controlling the second wave of the coronavirus due to which hospitals are facing a shortage of beds and oxygen. And in such a critical situation the government deciding to dissolve the House and announcing dates for mid-term elections is highly irresponsible, it mentions. The statement adds that the government has not taken seriously the issues related to COVID-19 and its impact.

The student unions have also stated that dissolving the House for the second time after the Supreme Court had reinstated it is totally against the constitutional rights of the people.
